Smooth aquaculture is confronted with a couple of demanding situations, together with public obstacle approximately environmental affects and the welfare of farmed fish. A basic realizing of fish biology is principal to discovering how one can meet those demanding situations and can also be crucial for holding the industry's sustainability.

Furthermore, the behaviour of fish less than tradition occasions has lengthy been overlooked regardless of heavy advertisement losses which could outcome from fish under pressure and for this reason disease-prone, because of undesirable husbandry techniques.

This vital e-book summarises the present knowing of the behavioural biology of farmed species and illustrates how this is utilized to enhance aquaculture practice.

Informative and interesting, Aquaculture & Behavior brings the reader updated with significant matters relating aquaculture. each person from fish farmers to higher point scholars will locate this e-book a useful and functional source. Libraries in universities and learn institutions the place animal habit, aquaculture, veterinary and organic sciences are studied and taught must have copies of this paintings on their shelves.

In addition, some scientists hold the view that, because feelings are subjective experiences, welfare defined in terms of feelings cannot be monitored or studied objectively (Arlinghaus et al. 2007). Carefully designed behavioural tests can help to probe the mental states and experiences of fish (Huntingford et al. 2007; Braithwaite 2010), but the results may not be easy to interpret or to apply in culture conditions. The working position taken in this book is that fish have sufficiently complex mental capacities that welfare, including those aspects that relate to feelings, is an appropriate and meaningful concept, while recognizing that our understanding of this issue may well change with further research.

Fresh water is a scarce resource, but it is an obvious and essential resource for the farming of fish and no single factor influences success or failure more than access to adequate supplies of good quality water (Tucker & Hargreaves 2008; Le Francois et al. 2010). Fish farms must compete with other users for finite water supplies, especially in arid regions or where most of the fresh water comes from groundwater resources. Some water sources that receive agricultural, industrial or domestic discharges may not be suitable for use in fish farming or must be subjected to prior treatment to remove physical, chemical and biological hazards.

However, the possibility of using knowledge about how genetic alterations at the molecular level underpin the evolution of behaviour and related traits in targeted selective breeding programmes is considered further in Chapter 11. 3 How complex is fish behaviour? Recently, there has been much discussion about just how complex fish behaviour is, mainly in the context of whether fish are conscious and sentient and so have the capacity for suffering. This reflects increasing concerns about the welfare of fish.
